Hi, I'm Dr. Monika Peterson
I obtained my undergraduate degree summa cum laude in Psychology at Arizona State University and my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Brigham Young University with an emphasis on eating disorder treatment.
I completed a one-year internship at Valley Mental Health in Salt Lake City, the fifth largest community mental health center in the country. While residing in Utah, I completed numerous psychological and psychosexual evaluations for the Fourth District Juvenile Court.
After graduation, I relocated to New Mexico and completed a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at The Samaritan Counseling Center prior to enjoying an active private practice specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. I also served as the Clinical Director of Adolescent Programs at The Eating Disorders Institute of New Mexico. As lead adolescent psychologist, I conducted therapy groups and offered meal support as part of the intensive outpatient treatment program at The Institute. Additionally, I contributed to the development of the program curriculum.

I’ve presented and published research in eating disorders and has earned the Outstanding Early Career Psychologist Award given by the National Register of Health Service Psychologists. I am a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Academy of Eating Disorders (AED), and the Southwest Eating Disorder Education Collaborative (SWEDEC). I am also a certified eating disorder specialist (CEDS) as recognized by The International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP) and am a size inclusive provider. I spend my time outside of work primarily with my teenage daughters often on the softball field, volleyball court, or dance stage. I also love to read, play the piano, be outdoors, and hang with my dogs.

Frequently asked questions
I approach psychotherapy primarily from a cognitive-behavioral/acceptance and commitment framework. I believe that identifying the unique relationships between emotions, thoughts, and behaviors allows patients to consider if the modification will lend to increased life satisfaction and enjoyment. Additionally, I value understanding feelings prior to attempts to change or accept them. Acceptance, mindfulness, and values clarification/practice are key features of my approach to psychotherapy. I am also a compassionate Health at Every Size provider (HAES).
I do not prescribe medication.
I am in-network with Aetna, BCBS (commercial plans only), and Cigna. If you do not have these insurance companies, you can check your out-of-network benefits. Please note that reimbursement from your insurer is not guaranteed. I suggest that you contact your insurer before beginning the process. I also accept Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) as a form of payment. A Good Faith Estimate under the No Surprise Act (H.R. 133) will be provided upon request or prior to the first session.
The fee for a 50-minute initial intake is $230. The fee for a 50-minute psychotherapy appointment is $195. Consultation fees are tailored to the individual. Please contact me for a more specific quote.
